In 2019, more than 2,300 people responded to our public consultation to tell us what they thought of the plans for the new leisure centre.
The feedback was overwhelmingly supportive of moving the leisure centre to Woolwich Town Centre and highlighted the need for it to be a community space rather than just a leisure centre.

Cabinet chose their preferred design and asked the project team to find a contractor to build the centre. Cabinet also agreed that the design and planning work should progress to include the Tramshed refurbishment and the residential development. This included finding a residential developer to work with the Council.

Planning consent was granted yesterday for the major refurbishment and extension of the Tramshed arts centre and community hub as part of the new Woolwich Leisure Centre Scheme.
The much-loved historic theatre, housed in a unique Edwardian power station that once served a tram network, will be sensitively rejuvenated by the Council to provide an exciting performing arts venue and spaces for community use.

The Council’s planning board voted unanimously to approve the scheme at a meeting on 20 September. The decision is subject to completion of a legal agreement and referral to the Mayor of London for final approval before construction can begin.
